If you’re in marketing, you’ve certainly heard the drumbeat lately: No more AORs! Down with retainers! More transparency! We at Downtown Partners could not agree more. You see, this new way of working that everyone seems to be calling for is the way we’ve been working since our founding 11 years ago. We’ve long known that the most insightful, best-performing creative doesn’t have to come from an overstaffed team from an oversized agency, so we’ve assembled a nimble collection of senior level problem solvers. We understand that if you want AOR status you’d better earn it, so we relish the opportunity to showcase our skills on a project basis. And as for transparency, we’ve got an open floor plan and nowhere to hide anything even if we wanted to. We reject the notion these latest industry “wake-up calls” constitute some type of revolution in the ad industry. On the contrary, lots of folks in the ad industry have been calling for these changes for years. In 2005, we decided to build a better type of agency that puts clients, results and creative first and checks egos and needless layers of staffing and charges at the door. It’s been a great model for us ever since. Now, all of a sudden, it’s being heralded as the model of the future.
